Frequently asked questions

We understand you may have questions about pediatric developmental consulting and how we can support your child. Here are some of the most common inquiries families have, along with our answers.

Answers to your questions

At Pediatric Developmental Consulting in Fergus, Ontario, we aim to provide clarity and support every step of the way. Our commitment to excellence ensures that you receive detailed information to make informed decisions for your child's developmental journey.

Do I need a referral?

No, a referral is not required.

To access our services, you must be the legal guardian of the child.

Who is eligible for service?

These services are designed for families with infants and young children who have questions or concerns about development and want early, supportive guidance. This may include caregivers who are noticing differences in communication, regulation, movement, feeding, play, or social‑emotional development; families seeking reassurance or perspective without pursuing a diagnosis; or those waiting for formal assessment and looking for support in the meantime. Services may also be helpful for families of children with a history of prematurity, medical complexity, or early stress, or for caregivers who simply want practical strategies and a clearer understanding of what is typical, what can vary, and when additional support may be helpful.

Is it covered by insurance?

No.

Insurers often define coverage based on acute medical necessity. Developmental consultations may be viewed as screening or educational rather than treating a specific, active medical illness.

Where do sessions take place?

Session locations are flexible to best suit your family's needs. We offer services at our office in Fergus, Ontario, as well as in-home visits or virtual consultations, depending on what is most convenient and effective for your child's development.
Based on the needs of your family, sessions can take place where you feel you need support the most- e.g. play groups, routine outings, or an event/routine that you find difficult.

How long will I receive service?

The duration of service is highly individualized and depends on your child's specific developmental goals and progress. We will work with you to create a personalized plan and regularly review its effectiveness to ensure optimal outcomes.

Will my child get a diagnosis?

Our role as developmental consultants is to provide assessments, guidance, and strategies to support your child's development. While we can identify developmental patterns and concerns, formal diagnoses are typically made by medical doctors or specialists. We can assist in coordinating with other professionals for diagnostic purposes.
